I care about smart development that respects Miami Beach's world-class Art Deco assets, values our historic neighborhoods and workforce-affordable housing, and will not overwhelm the residential quality of life. When the city is considering zoning incentives, or when the state is imposing one-size-fits-all laws that violate sound local zoning, I want someone who understands and will stand up for those principles. Years ago, former Mayor David Dermer and I agreed to hand over the Save Miami Beach PAC name to Daniel, who showed an astute grasp of politics and a willingness to take bold stances effectively. I do not regret that decision, and I am relieved that Daniel is willing to join the Commission and make the case for smart development in Tallahassee, where we need a passionate advocate who can speak to the dangers of over-riding local control in zoning.

Daniel went to 100’s of such commission meetings for architectural preservation and other related causes. He was only 28 years old when we met. Most people that age would have been home playing video games, but he sat through untold hours of tedious commission meetings for what he believed in. He’s also been an enormously effective and respected executive director of Miami Design Preservation League for the last 8 years, which is located in the landmark building on 10th street and Ocean Dr. Besides Daniel’s continued fight to save Miami Beach’s precious landmarks and history, he also curated events and organized the world famous annual Art Deco Festival. In addition to all his accomplishments, he’s a genuinely nice person, always accessible, a great listener and willing to help. He’s hardworking and dedicated, too! What more could Miami Beach ask for in a commissioner!

I have the great privilege of knowing Daniel and to be a witness of all that he has done to save the historic and unique architecture of Miami Beach. We worked together in saving the mosaic murals of the Cuban American Italian sculptor Enzo Gallo, the old bank at Alton and Lincoln that had those murals was going to be demolished along with the magnificent works of art that commemorated passages of great events of the history of our nation! Daniel formed a committee ; we went to the City Hall multiple times and spoke in defense of the murals, we talked to the people that came from Amsterdam to build the hotel, we engaged the family and his son Julio Gallo, MD formed part of the Committee, Daniel went several times to the English Speaking TV channels and I was interviewed by the Spanish Speaking TV channels at the end the Dutch people building the hotel, joined forces with us and helped us save the murals and paid a large sum to dismount them and paid the experts that indicated where the tiles should be cut; Daniel found a place where to lodge the murals that were very large, for a minimal charge and the culmination of our work was a historic meeting at the City Hall, where we officially gave ownership of the murals to the City to be placed in an area of honor! All these we owe to Daniel Ciraldo and his energy and devotion to the City of Miami Beach! I think he will make a brilliant city commissioner and our beloved city of Miami Beach will keep progressing in the proper way, respecting the past and accepting the future!!!
